This story was the basis for her novelà The Bluest Eyeà (1970).à à Other novels have enjoyed both critical and popular success, including à Sulaà (nominated for a National Book Award in 1975),à Song of Solomonà (1977),à Belovedà (1987) andà Jazzà (1992). Morrison has been called a writer who has enriched our literary heritage over a life of service, or a corpus of work à and one whose à novels [are] characterized à by visionary force and poetic import [and] give life to an essential aspect of American reality. Here are ten of the most memorable lines from Morrisons worksà and lectures: 1. à ââ¬Å"Make up a story For our sake and yours forget your name in the street; tell us what the world has been to you in the dark places and in the light. Dont tell us what to believe, what to fear. Show us beliefs wide skirt and the stitch that unravels fears caul.â⬠à ââ¬â¢Ã à The Nobel Lecture In Literature, 1993 2. à ââ¬Å"She is a friend of my mind. She gather me, man. The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order.â⬠à à Beloved 3. à ââ¬Å"Dont ever think I fell for you, or fell over you. I didnt fall in love, I rose in it.â⬠à Jazz 4. à ââ¬Å"I tell my students, When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.â⬠5. à ââ¬Å"What difference do it make if the thing you scared of is real or not?â⬠à Song of Solomonà 6. à ââ¬Å"In this country American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.â⬠7. à ââ¬Å"Along with the idea of romantic love, she was introduced to anotherphysical beauty. Probably the most destructive ideas in the history of human thought. Both originated in envy, thrived in insecurity, and ended in disillusion.â⬠à The Bluest Eye 8. à ââ¬Å"Love is or it aint. Thin love aint love at all.â⬠à Beloved 9. à ââ¬Å"Gimme hate, Lord,â⬠he whimpered. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take hate any day. But donââ¬â¢t give me love. I canââ¬â¢t take no more love, Lord. I canââ¬â¢t carry itItââ¬â¢s too heavy. Jesus, you know, You know all about it. Ainââ¬â¢t it heavy? Jesus? Ainââ¬â¢t love heavy?â⬠à Song of Solomonà 10. à ââ¬Å"All paradises, all utopias are designed by who is not there, by the people who are not allowed in.

Determine Number of Protons and Electrons in Ions
Determine Number of Protons and Electrons in Ions The number of protons and electrons in an atom or molecule determines its charge and whether it is a neutral species or an ion. This worked chemistry problem demonstrates how to determine the number of protons and electrons in an ion. For atomic ions, the key points to keep in mind are: A neutral atom has the same number of protons and electrons. This number is the atomic number of the element.A positively-charged ion or cation has more protons than electrons. The proton number is the atomic number of the element, while the electron number is the atomic number minus the charge.A negatively-charged ion or anion has more electrons than protons. Again, the number of protons is the atomic number. The number of electrons is the atomic number added to the charge. Protons and Electrons Problem Identify the number of protons and electrons in the Sc3 ion. Solution Use the Periodic Table to find the atomic number of Sc (scandium). The atomic number is 21, which means that scandium has 21 protons. While a neutral atom for scandium would have the same number of electrons as protons, the ion is shown to have a 3 charge. This means it has 3 fewer electrons than the neutral atom or 21 - 3 18 electrons. Answer The Sc3 ion contains 21 protons and 18 electrons. Protons and Electrons in Polyatomic Ions When you are working with polyatomic ions (ions consisting of groups of atoms), the number of electrons is greater than the sum of the atomic numbers of the atoms for an anion and less than this value for a cation.

Italian Political Violence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Italian Political Violence - Essay Example ship (1922-1943), Italian history, before and after Mussolini, has been characterized by an enormous volume of political violenceâ⬠(Leonard & Lee, 1987, p.34). Major violent events have been recorded as occurring at pace of about one every two years from the 1860s until the advent of Fascist rule and then resuming at only a slightly reduced rate in the years. After the World War II, Many of these violent activities came up as a result of workers and peasant strikes, land seizures and factory occupations. Others included bread riots, anti-tax riots and anti-war demonstration. While some events were aimed at the government others were between private groups fighting among themselves. Some scholars have never the less downplayed this past event as being non terrorist and argued that real terrorist activities began in the 1960ââ¬â¢s with the bombing of the National Agricultural Bank at Piazza Fontana in Milan and to have subsided with the arrest and eventual prosecution of large numbers of terrorists, after General James Dozier was liberated from the Red Brigade in 1982. Never the less the timeline between these two occurrences saw terrorist organizations (claiming inspiration from either anarchist, communist or neo-fascist doctrines) commit several acts of violence. These activities caused hundreds of deaths, some of which included that of a former prime minister. Thousands of people were reported injured including a pope, and in retrospect, more thousands were sent to prison for committing the violence. All this occurred in a country governed by a democratic political regime, no less and probably somewhat more democratic in 19132 than it was in 1969, with an advanced industrialized economy and having a population noted justifiably for its cultural sophistication and social tolerance. Each of the countrys 94 provinces is said to have been a venue for political violence. For example: Turin, Milan, and Rome. But what were the reasons for this renewed trend of

Classic Tales Of Tom Sawyer :: essays research papers
Classic Tales of Tom Sawyer à à à à à Grudgingly going through the motions of reading page after page of a book while pretending to be interested is not a pleasurable way to spend time. Reading a book with a weak plot, dull setting, and lifeless characters requires much effort. Unfortunately, many books are like this. Some books are not as difficult to read and enjoy, but only a tiny percentage of books deserve enough to wear the classification of ââ¬Å"classic,â⬠like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. à à à à à Finding out what makes a piece of literary work a ââ¬Å"classicâ⬠is essential to fully understanding the significance of the books. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Twain successfully brings the story alive and makes it a pleasure to read. This book has gained the respect of people all over the world and earned itself this special distinction, because it contains the necessary substance. These integral ingredients of a classic are the vivid descriptions of the physical aspects of the story ââ¬â the characters and setting, an entertaining and eventful plot, and the lasting truths the story's themes express. à à à à à The most vivid memories of this story come from the striking descriptions of the physical aspects of the story. Mark Twain immediately brings the story to life with his introduction of the characters and their surroundings. From here, the familiarity of the characters and setting continues to grow. The depictions of the characters, both in mannerisms and dialogue, are so picturesque that Tom's superstitions and fantasies soon cause no great surprises, Aunt Polly's religious sayings and hidden affection for her ââ¬Å" mischeevousâ⬠Tom come to be expected, and Sid's sly attacks on Tom appear deserving of Tom's revenge. à à à à à The unique setting of St. Petersburg on the Mississippi River provides a suitable background for all of the characters' adventures. With McDougal's Cave's ââ¬Å"vast labyrinth of crooked aislesâ⬠nearby, the pirates' hideaway island along with the old haunted house, Tom is situated in a setting worthy of his activities. à à à à à The second needed portion of a classic is a captivating plot that appeals to people of all ages. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has no lack of this enchantment. Tom's ââ¬Å"giddy and harum-scarumâ⬠devilment, his romance with Becky Thatcher, and Aunt Polly's masked feelings for Tom all provide for an especially entertaining and humorous sample of life on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. As the story progresses, despite the many changes of scenery, the reader relates comfortably with the characters, their personalities and the surroundings. à à à à à Disguised in the events of the plot are the themes the author wishes to express. These themes in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are not explicitly stated,
